Bed bug treatment in Birmingham

Bed bug control in Birmingham is a process, not a single spray. A specialist confirms what you have, picks heat or a spray course, and comes back until the bugs and their eggs are gone.

Below you can see each method's temperatures, visits and typical costs before you ask anyone round.

Two more short steps follow: the property, then your contact details.

Free to use. This is an introduction service, not a pest control firm: we pick a bed bug specialist who covers your postcode, tell you who they are, and pass on nothing until you agree. About this service

A heat treatment day, measured two ways

Temperature against time during a typical heat treatmentThe room air passes 50°C within about an hour and levels off near 60°C. A probe inside the mattress lags behind, crossing 45°C after nearly three hours and 50°C after about three and a quarter, then holds above 50°C for more than two hours before the heaters go off and both lines fall.20°30°40°50°60°0 h2 h4 h6 h8 h45°C: damage beginsHold: 50°C or moreat the probe for 2 h (BPCA)Heat-upCool-down°C
Why the mattress matters more than the room. The air in a room gets hot quickly; the places bed bugs hide do not. A sound treatment is timed by sensors inside furniture, not by the thermostat. Lines are illustrative, drawn to the targets in BPCA guidance and the laboratory figures in Kells and Goblirsch (2011); a real day varies with the home.

Why one visit is rarely enough

Most insecticides do not kill bed bug eggs. Eggs laid just before the first visit hatch over the next week or two, so the second visit is timed to catch the young bugs before they are old enough to lay eggs themselves.

Heat is different: held at the right temperature it kills eggs too, which is why it is a single day with a check later.

Birmingham notes: the council, flats and shared houses

The council service is unconfirmed

Birmingham City Council has charged residents for some pest treatments, such as rats, and its pest service was disrupted during the bin strike, with some insect treatments suspended. We could not find a current bed bug price on its website, so check with the council through its pest problems at home page before relying on it.

Tower blocks and converted flats

Bed bugs move between flats along pipe runs and through gaps in shared walls. If you live in a block, tell the specialist which neighbours have had them, and if your landlord is the council or a housing association, report it to them too: they may need to treat the flats around yours.

Shared houses and students

Selly Oak, Bournbrook and the streets around Aston University have many shared houses, where bugs travel along landings. Birmingham's landlord licensing schemes make the condition of a let the landlord's business; our landlords and HMOs page explains the usual split.

How much does bed bug treatment cost in Birmingham?

As a guide, a spray course is £280 to £550 for a one-bedroom flat and £360 to £750 for a three-bedroom house; heat is £700 to £1,100 and £1,000 to £1,700 for the same homes. These are national figures, as no published guide gives a Birmingham rate. The planner works out a range for your home.

Does Birmingham City Council treat bed bugs?

We could not confirm that it currently does, or what it charges. The council's pest service has been disrupted and some insect treatments suspended during the bin strike. Check with the council on its pest problems at home page before relying on it. Our note on the council service sets out what is known.

Which is better, heat or spray?

Neither wins every time. Spray is cheaper and leaves a residue that keeps working, but needs two or three visits. Heat kills every stage in one day with no insecticide on the bed, but costs more and leaves nothing behind. Many specialists combine them.

How many visits will it take?

Usually two or three for spray, about two weeks apart, because eggs laid before the first visit hatch afterwards. Heat is one long day, normally with a check visit two or three weeks later.

Should I throw my mattress away?

Usually not. Mattresses can be treated and then sealed in an encasement. Carrying an infested mattress through the house to the bins spreads bugs, and a new one in an untreated room soon has them too. Our mattress note covers the choice.

Can I sleep in my bed during treatment?

Yes, once the specialist says the room is safe to use. Keep sleeping in your own bed: if you move to the sofa, the bugs follow you and spread to a new room.

Are you a pest control company?

No. This is a free introduction service covering Birmingham. We find a bed bug specialist, tell you who they are, and pass on your details only if you agree. About this service.
